General Description: Nantahala River (Class 2-3) The Nantahala (pronounced nan-ta-HAY-la) , the River of the Noonday Sun, alternates between calm spells of sparkling flatwater to over 20 named rapids. This feisty river is a particular favorite for families since the U.S. Forest Service only requires that children weigh 60 pounds in order to go on the trip. Rafting trips are typically a half day adventure down eight and a half miles of this area's most scenic terrain. Rafters will get acquainted with the rapids named Isle of Dumping, Root Canal, Little S.O.B. and the Bump. For those who are more daring, run the river in a one or two person inflatable duckie (also called funyaks).
