With moderate temperatures year-round, Cherokee County welcomes visitors to charming small towns and remarkable scenic beauty. Mountain outdoor adventure in the Nantahala National Forest includes hiking, camping, backpacking, trout fishing, and picnicking. The Nantahala River, attracting rafting enthusiasts nationwide, begins

in Cherokee County on its way through the spectacular Nantahala Gorge. Boating, fishing and water-skiing are popular on Cherokee County's three recreational mountain lakes.

Cherokee County is also home to one of the most remarkable craft centers in the United States, the John C. Campbell Folk School. Founded in 1925 and listed on the National

Register of Historic Places, the school offers over 750 classes year-round in traditional Appalachian arts and crafts.

Preservation efforts have led to designation of historical buildings, houses and inns as major heritage resources. The delightful atmosphere makes the mountains of Cherokee County a truly wonderful place to be.
